The three are the act of weakness, the act of courage and the act of the truth. These traits are shown all through the story and have a great part in what happens.

Just like Reverend Hale in The Crucible, he is a hero in many ways, but he questions everybody and later defends the people he questions and tries to take the blame. This goes for Judge Danforth, too. He worries more about his reputation as a judge that he is willing to hang innocent people in the community. Danforth believes Abigail and the girls because he does not want to publically admit he was deceived by them, for it will harm his reputation. Through the Salem witch trials, twenty-four innocent people lost their lives due to betrayal. They were hung because they were accused and found to be guilty of witchcraft.

In reality, everyone that was accused and had died were innocent, but used as targets by others to save their own lives. Danforth uses this fear to keep them from revolting because they cannot openly share concerns without being a target. This is because he chose to stay with his statement which said that Abigail was a fraud and he chose that which would get him hung. John refused to let the whole town find out about his affair and further embarrass his wife, as well as the loss of the respect he received in his village.

Danforth is a lacking character because he put the needs of the government ahead than caring for his people. Danforth refuses to free Proctor in the Crucibles,but other people likes him even though he finds and contain massive evidence from innocent people.
