Why is msu wearing gold

I get it, and I'm okay with it. There are definitely people who are sick of the theme, but I loved that movie and still do. When I left the theater after watching it, my first thought was "MSU has to incorporate this somehow. It'd be awesome if Gerard Butler came to a game, but that's crazy.

Lo and behold, Butler showed up to Michigan State's game vs. Illinois last year asking Spartan Stadium fans what their profession was. Hint: It's ahoo. While I would have preferred a black or green helmet, but I can respect the choice to go with bronze.

Of course, the question of the fight song is a legitimate one. Interestingly enough, something few Spartans fans know is the football team used to wear black and gold jerseys with winged helmets in the s and 40s.

So there is SOME tradition to the decision. But no white outside of the shoes? It just looks strange. The uniform is a throwback; it's a classy look. The "Gridiron Gold" design and numeral font are reminiscent of the style worn by the Tigers during the career of Y. Tittle, who played at LSU from The idea to create the throwback design was triggered by Tittle's visit to campus a few years ago, the school said in a statement.

The old gold color of the throwback jersey mimics the color worn by Tittle and his teammates. The helmet numbers are a tribute to LSU's helmet design from , when the players' jersey numbers were displayed on each side of the headgear. LSU doesn't often stray from its traditional uniforms: white tops at home and on the road and a gold helmet with the Tiger logo.

Coach Les Miles' crew did it twice last season, though. They were forced to wear purple tops at home during the game against South Carolina because it was the Gamecocks' home game. LSU also wore white helmets in that game, a win in what was coach Steve Spurrier's final game with South Carolina. The Tigers wore all white in a game at Ole Miss last season, a loss. It was the first time LSU had worn all white since against Auburn.

Saturday will be just the sixth time in the modern era that LSU has worn while helmets. They're in the first five games. At the same time, the uniform pays homage to their ancient Greek warrior namesakes with whom Spartans fans and athletes identify now more than ever.

Bronze was the material the Spartans used for their helmets and armor in the Battle of Thermopylae. Foremost among all considerations is the fact that when you come right down to it, we're talking about a game that involves a ball, is played by toyear-olds and is supposed to be fun. If getting to wear a special uniform once in awhile is going to make the players happy, then who is anyone to say otherwise?

The idea came up during the minute postseason interviews Coach Mark Dantonio has with each player in January. Defensive end William Gholston , the top member of the previous year's recruiting class, knew about the Nike's Pro Combat program and asked if MSU, a Nike-equipped team, would be able to participate? After Michigan State made the cut, members of the Spartans' Unity Council, including co-captain Kirk Cousins , got to see mock-ups of the uniforms in April. It just showed that Michigan State is even more in the forefront than maybe we thought.

So, that was exciting. It's a great opportunity and obviously now we need to play well in them. Having a say in such matters is indicative of the ownership the players are afforded within the program. During their individual meetings, the players can talk to Dantonio about any topic including: playing time, academics, family, girlfriends and uniforms.

Coach Dantonio listened to Will, and listens to his players in general. It's exciting to be a part of it, and it also shows the players have a voice in this program.
